The Sixth Sense is a largely ponderous film whose salva- tion is the clever twist at the end. It leases the audience going over the film scene-by- scene to piece things together. Wr BRUCE Willis and eight-year-old Haley Joe! Osment in His fear is palpable. Haley Joel Osment (Forrest Gump Jr. in Forrest Gump) gives a convincing performance as the reluctant channel for the mes- sages of the-dead, who does- n’c want to burden his mother with his terrible secret. Bruce Willis, performance is understated to the point of being plodding, though the reveladion at the end of the film explains things some- what. The female roles are underwritten but well per- formed. Toni Coilette of Friday, August 6, 1999 — North Shore News - 27 scary Sixth Muriel’s Wedding is great as a single mom holding down two joos, trying to keep her sanity while watching her son grapple with his own. She nailed the accent, too. The part of Anna would’ve been a lot more interesting if better written. There are other problems with the script. Cole’s powers are a bit sketchy. He sees unfortunate souls caught between this world and the next, he seems to have the ability to read people’s pasts, but he’s constantly asking his ~alizime anid long distance. Cole becomes 2 happy, well-adjusted child all too quickly after a lifetime of hauntings. And just where did he get the bruises and welts cn his body? Were they self- inflicted or did the ghosts actually harm him? The issue is never explored. The pace is deliberately slow, too slow for some, but punctuated with some. gen- uine scary bits.
