lucky with a surprise
hit, why is it they don’t
take the money and run
like most of us would
do?

Instead they try and get away with it nice,
drawing attention to their crimes.
In this case, the charge is misuse of the pub-
lic’s leisure time through trite dialogue, 2
threadbare
storyline and
characters we
don't give a
hoot about.

ster teen hit

Freddie
Prinze Jr. the
screen’s answer to Boyz to Men.
Hoping to score again with the same formu-
" la/same lead actor, Iscove brings us Boys and
Girls, the | stylistic twin of She’s All That, but
without any of the human interest, gags or wit
“of his last film.

friendship when sex is thrown into the mix. For
a story that hinges on audience interest in the

relationship, the nwo Jeads are
remarkably dull. It teels like
the actors are reciting solilo-
quies; as though th

every scene independently of
gach other.

Prinze Jr. brings all the
intensity of bad soap opera
acting to the role, only with
more gesticulating. While it is
admirable of Prinze fr. to
smother his sex appeal

beneath bra g glasses, he is torally
unbelievable as engineering student Ryan.

And Forlani? Maybe she’s too old tor the
role of perky-yer-wild college student (over the
hill at 282) but her portrayal of Jennifer, while
slightly more engaging than Prinze Jr’s, is sorely
lacking. .

Unfortunately, the supporting characters are
also painfully underwritten. Greater screen time
for them might have raken some of the focus
offof the uninspired relationship benveen Ryan
and Jennifer.

Amanda Detmer, (Drop Dead Gorgeous) is
fun to watch while she’s onscreen as Any,
Jennifer’s neurotic best friend. A gratuitous kiss
between Amy and Jennifer can only have been
included in the film so it could be nominated
for “Best Onscreen Kiss” honours at the MTV
Video Awards. Girls smooching always attracts a
crowd. (Remember Cruel Intention

Jason Biggs (recently seen in American Pie)
as Ryan’s roommate floats in and out of the
movie — his character serves no discernible
purpose whatsoever.

“Quick! Maybe they won’t notice how bad
it is if we throw in a dance number.” And so
follows a thoroughly poindess over-choreo-
graphed dance number, complete with crop
tops and jets of foam, (Note: the same
occurred, minus the foam, at the prom in She’s
All That. ,)

The title is about the only thing the makers
of this movie got right: Yes, there are Boys.
There are also Girls. Everything else is just rak-
ing up film.
