north shore MAIL BOX Mercer’s views outrageous Dear Editor: Shoot first, think later (or not at all), Tana Mercer must have gotten the journalistic ana- logue of a Kalashnikov ay an carly Valentine's Day gift and is busy trving it our. In her Feb. 6 column (“Drawing the line on human rights”) she joyfully and indis- criminately draws a bead, then sprays with rapid-firing invec- tive just abour everyone on her left. Be grateful. The casualties would have been higher had there been any substantial numbers on her Tight. Talk about “bash- ing” and “whining!” But aside from the sheer exuberance of her attack, there is nothing new in her method. It’s called the Least Common Denominator Approach (LCDA) and was widely used by both sides dur- ing the Cold War. It goes like this: if vou can find somerhing worse ebewhere — in poverty, crime, pollution, faves, what- ever, then be coment with what vou have, and don’t point fingers at us, point fin- gers at them. For Canadians this means that until crime reaches the proportions in’ South Africa, poverty is as intense and wide- spread as in Bangladesh, pol- lution as stifling as in Beijing, and ethnic violence as lethal as that cf Rwanda or Bosnia, jt shut up! If youre really disturbed by these inequities and iniqui- ties, then devote your efforts to improving the situation in all chose countries, where they are quite unlikely to be effee- tive, and ler Canada sink into its own morass without a peep. Ms, Mercer is also (big sur- prise) quite willing to torget ews about history in her depiction of crime in South Alfica, her country of origin. For starters, mavbe she should try John Readers’ african, a Biography of she Continent, Talk about crime! Perhaps she doesn’t know the history of Somerset, Rhodes, Leopold, de Beers and others responsible for the physical eradication of black Africans, the disruptien of their socieries, and deroga- tion of their lives and culture. No wonder she ridicules human rights advocates; she apparently is simply unfamiliar with the whole concept. What Ms. Mercer does understand, however, are the media. Be outrageous and vou will be read T have been vie- timized once. Never again. Eugene Kaellis Burnaby Multicultural Society bms@iriag.net millions of Feeling Blue This Winter?
