faces change

NSAC appointments to come

THE North Shore Arts
Commission (NSAC)
faces the new year with
the challenge of promot-
ing arts on the North
Shore without the sup-
port of West Vancouver.

The District. of West
Vancouver first announced its
intention to cut funding to the
tri-municipal agency last May
during discussions between the
mayors and NSAC’s executive
committee on the future of
NSAC.

West Vancouver gave formal
notice of its intent to withdraw
from the commission ina June
26 letter to commission chair-
man Don S. Williams.

Bur West Vancouver Mayor
Pat Boname sees the commis-
sion's proposed change “from
being a policy-making body
concerned with long-range
planning to an operating body
working on smali projects” as a
duplication of services.

Boname is not convinced
that a restructured commission
will be any more effective. “I
don’t think it will work — cer-
tainly not for us and probably
not for them either.”
