The vast majority of todays
sophisticated engines use a
timing belt to drive the
camshaft and balance shaft.
Belts have replaced chains due
to lighter weight and quieter, more
efficient and economical operation.

There are two types of engines in cars,
interference and non-interference design.
The critical difference is that interference
design engines have valves that will come into
contact (interfere) with the pistons. Vehicle
engines of an “interference’’ design can suffer
major internal damage should the timing belt
break during operation. The repair cost for this
type of damage can be up fo ten times the cost
of normal belt replacement.

The average recommended replace-
ment interval varies between manufacturers
from 80,000krms to 100,000kms.

The cost for a timing belt replacement
varies between $100 and $350. The price is af
fected by the complexity of access to the belt
and the other services performed at the same time.
These services include oil and filter change, tune-
ups, valve adjustment and gasket replacement.
