the early 1900s by viewing
the executive car ‘‘British
-Columbia’’ just east of the
BC Rail Station at the foot
of Pemberton Avenue in
North Vancouver. -

The viewing of this car will cost
you nothing, and you can also
take in a second car, the
*‘Cowichan River’’ (an ex-CP day
coach built in 1949), which has
been turned into a museum car
for the West. Coast Railway
Association.

The “British Columbia’’ “is a

fine-example of the wooden pas-
senger car, in the era of Canadian
Tailways.
’ Built by the Barney and -Smith
Car Co. in 1890 as a sleeping car
named Sherbrooke, for the CPR,
it was converted to a private car
in 1910.

The rebuilding took place in the
CPR’s. Angus Shops, and _ this
classic business car was the result.

In the early 1900s the railway
was the main means of transpor-
tation, and for the business execu-
tive, this was the way to go.

Aglow with rich varnished wood
and brass. fittings, this car could
accommodate 10 people. ,

There is a comfortable sitting
area at the rear of the car,
followed by _the executive’s
bedroom, complete with brass
bed. : :

Next to it is a compartment for
his secretary, and then a private
room for the steward.

At the front of the: car is a
galley for food preparation and a
dining area.

Bought for preservation from
the CPR, by a group of Van-
couver railway enthusiasts known
as the West Caast Railway

- Association, it has been given new

life.

They completely restored and

replaced major structural members
such as the roof and exterior
sheathing. .

The interior has been totally
refurbished down to the recoating
of the interior panels with 12
coats of varnish.

This car is representative of the
type of rolling stock that arrived
in the first train into Vancouver
behind locomotive No. 374 in
1886.

These cars are open for viewing
from 9 a.m. to § p.m. Wednesday
to Sunday during July and
August.
