Dodd was a daughter of the West, born to hardship and destined tc lose the guidance of her mother when she was still very young. Her father, William Smart, was left to rear his young family of five sons and a daughter. That he managed and triumphed is a mat- ter of history. It took a year, perhaps longer, to move prospering Spokane to action, but Dodd’s work with community groups, local govern- ment officials and the churches, finally culminated in the first Fa- ther’s Day in June, 1910. It was her idea to present her father with Father’s Day on his birthday, which in 1919 was the first Sunday in June. But, the local ministry could not prepare special sermons in time for the specified day, so it was postponed to the third Sun- day in June. All over the world, Father’s Day is still celebrated on that day and enjoyed in scores of nations. Father’s Day is now an integral fibre in the tapestry of our na- tional culture, observed in every Canadian village, town and city. It is observed in as many different ways as there are grateful sons and daughters. There will be many greeting cards posted and gifts galore will be showered on dads from one end of the country to the other. As well, telephone calls — tocal and tong distance — wil! abound. Few if any other holidays have such universal appeal, such ex- panding observance. Father’s Day grows and thrives as celebrations become more exuberant year by year. FOR FATHER’S DAY A Tilley Hat!
