12 - Friday, January 31, 1992 ~ North Shore News Conservation bid to buy green space fails Tower Hill subdivision proposal WEST VANCOUVER District Council declined Monday night to help a conservation group buy out’ the developer of the pro- posed six-acre Tower Hill subdivision in the municipality’s Altamont area. By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer “Our present budget require- ments are such that we are unable to honor this request, much as every one of us would like to see that piece of land preserved in its ratural state,’ said Ald. Andy Danyliu. At the previous council meeting, Rosebery Avenue resident Patricia ’ Lepp brought forward a request from NOW (Neighbors of Wildlife) asking council to come up with the $75,000 deposit need- ed to secure the eventual purchase of the 2907 Rosebery Ave. prop- erty. Located in the Altamont area, Tower Hill is a rural enclave with a single house that has been own- WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL ed by only two families since West Vancouver was incorporated. A developer has ~~ worked for several years to secure a sub- division of the land into several lots amid controversy over the placement of the subdivision’s houses in relation to the adjacent creek ravine. Lepp was also concerned about the great variety of wildlife she and others have noticed frequen- ting the area. She said the $75,000 deposit to stop the work under way on the site would give someone like the Turtle Island Earth Stewards the opportunity to raise the $5 million needed to buy the land for preser- vation, But council expressed some skepticism as to how the money would be raised. “tt is hard not to take advan- tage of this. It is a beautiful piece of property. But chese are tough times. We can't responsibly gam- ble with $75,000 of taxpayers’ meney,"” said Ald. Diana Hut- chinson.
