44 - Wednesday, March 13. 1991 - North Shore News Handsworth teacher honored HANDSWORTH SFCONDARY music teacher, Bob Rebagliati, has been named the winner ot the 1991 Professional Music Educator Award. Rebaghau, head oof Hand- sworth’s Music Department, is the first secondary school teacher in B.C. to win the award. The BCL Mausie Educators’ award is presented to a music teacher who goes besond the call of duty in demonstrating his or her dedication and commitment to music education both inside and outside the classroom, Rebagliat’s music program, de- veloped over the past 18 years, at- tracts about one-third of the Handsworth student population. Handsworth bands, both con- cert and jazz. have consistently been among the top three in B.C. at various music festivals. In addi- tion, they have won the cherished first place gold at the Canadian Nationals several times. Rebavliati has worked throughout Western Canada as a music adjudicator, lecturer and workshop leader. Over the pest 10 years, he has directed and [ed B.C. music camps. Rebagliati is also a partner and teacher at the highly respected New West Jazz Clinic held each August in) Vancouver and Vic- toria. At the conference, West) Van- couver's Lloyd Slind was honored as the BCMEA founding member. Siind founded the B.C. Music Educator’s Association in 1957 and was the organization's presi- dent from 1958-59. He is a retired music professor with the Faculty of Education at the University of British Cotum- bia. After the bills are all paid, Bassam said he hapes the North Vancouver Rotary Club will have between $60,000 and $70,000 for charities.
