playwright’s artistic vision. But
most don’t have to worry
about parental approval, and
then only on opening night
when mom and pop are tuck-
ed safely away in the darkness
of the audience.
_ Sarah-Anne Dafoe is an excep-
tion.

Even though he lives hundreds
of miles away, her playwright-
father is with her for every rehear-
sal, looking over her shoulder
every scene of every act of The
Frog Galliard.

Dafoe admits it’s made her feel
self-conscious as a director and
extremely protective as a daugh-
ter.

"t's a very special piece,’’ the
blue-eyed North Vancouver direc-
tor says as she contemplates an
unappetizing piece of apple pie
over lunch in a downtown Van-
couver Cafe.

Initially, Dafoe had hoped to be
cast as the play's lead character —
directing hadn't entered her mind.
But when scouting around for a
director proved unsuccesstul, she
decided to take on the job herself
rather than risk having someone
else tamper with the way she
thought the play should be pres-
ented.

Father Christopher Dafoe, a
former Vancouver Sun theatre crit-
ic, wrote The Frog Galliard in
1976. It premiered in Vancouver
the next year at the Vancouver
East Cultural Centre.

It’s a peculiar and extremely
funny story about an Elizabethan
playwright who is dying from food
poisoning after ingesting rancid
pickled herring,

And Dafoe delights in re-telling
the tale.
