W/V grants raise protest OVER $230,000 in grants to community groups was approved Monday night by West Vancouver District Council, but allocation of the funds raised protest from the representative of a West Van- couver ratepayers’ association. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer The grants ranged from $200 for the West Vancouver Sketch Club to $27,000 for North Shore Family Services to over $44,000 for the North Shore Arts Com- mission. Over 50 groups benefited from the grants. ‘*For a small investment, West Vancouver citizens are provided with many services of a quality that they wouldn’t be getting if the services were provided by the government,’’ said Ald. Pat Boname, who was involved in the lengthy approval process which starts with receipt of grant ap- plications at the end of January. Because of the process’s com- plexity, Boname protested when council] agreed last week to table the grant approvals so that the Ambleside/Dundarave Ratepayers Mappir ‘WEST. VANCOUVER. DISTRICT. COUNCIL. ft and other such groups could view the list of recipients. “It’s the taxpayers’ money,’’ said Ambleside/Dundarave Ratepayers representative Capt. Keorge Murrell, who criticized the ast. Murrell accused council of get- ting ‘‘carried away’? with grants to such bodies as the North Shore Arts Commission, which received $44,055, the North Shore Eco- nomic Development Commission, which received $20,990, and North Shore Tourism, which was granted $15,000. He could see ‘‘no legal justification’’ for the use of prop- erty tax money to. support Tourism Vancouver ($3,396) and the Vancouver Symphony. But council was convinced that the grant recipients were well chosen. “If we had to pay for these services, the cost would be out of sight,"’ said Ald.
