Here are some to share with your special loved ones: © A duel was some- times provoked by a person offering a gloved hand in greeting. °To ‘take up the glove’’ meant an accep- tance of a challenge. eLong before the Christian era, in the sale of land, a glove was given to the purchaser as a guarantee of the ac- tual transfer of posses- sion — it represented the title and deed to the property. © In the 17th century, a young lady would sleep with one glove under her pillow in the hope of finding her mate (somewhat similar to the custom of sleep- ing on the wedding cake of a friend with the hope of an immediate romance). * Long ago, when a young man married, he gave to his bride’s fa- ther one of his gloves as a symbolic guarantee that he could care for his bride single-handed. * As the word glove mingles in loving tradi- tions and romance, and contains the word love, so too, it seems the fingers of many gloves touch the hearts and lives of people who wear them in pride.
