School board should consuit residents

Dear Editor:

It is truly unfortunate that the
placement of the portable
classroom at Ridgeway Annex has
caused a great deal of
neighborhood disruption, both
among the local residents and the
parents.

My concerns are as follows:

I do not believe that portable
classrooms should be placed on
any school site, without parent and
neighborhood consultation.

If the consultation process had
been done as is stipulated under
North Vancouver City’s temporary

building bylaw, the current prob-
lems could have been resolved
without any extra costs to the tax-
payers and io the satisfaction of
both local residents and the
parents.

Having said that though, I do
believe that the safety and well-
being of the children must take
priority.

The use of portable buildings by
the school board should be
restricted to emergencies. With
proper planning in a stable com-
munity such as North Vancouver
City (unlike fast-growing Surrey),

there should be very little reason
for the use of portable buldings.

One has to ask if the closure of
Cloverly School was a little short-
sighted, given the growth in the
student population today.

There is no easy solution to the
current problem, but I hope the
school board will set up a con-
sultative process with both the
neighbors and the parents to work
out a long-term solution to con-
cerns of both groups.
