Opening the series Oct. 15 is the Van- couver Chamber Winds Octet and pianist Coffey in an evéning of Mozart. After that, the next concert Nov. 12 takes a different twist, featuring performances on electric and acoustic violin. Later concerts in the series feature the B.C. Boys’ Choir, the Vancouver String Quartet and the Karen Jamieson Dance Company. With the continuing aim of taking classical music to the people, Coffey and husband Ramsbottom will this year orga- nize, host, or perform more than 40 con- certs, with programs and venues designed to appeal to all. Tel headquarters, respectively. Out of the success of the art gallery series has come the Music After Hours concerts, adding to the VAG's day-time program with evening performances. Again this season Ramcoff wants to bring classical music to a wider audience, in- cluding youth; thanks to the Cherniavsky Junior Club of the Performing Arts, Ramcoff can offer youths 18 and under half-price tickets. For Coffey and Ramsbottom, the busy season follows a summer that saw them joining the Carmel International Bach Fes- tival in California, the Open Chamber Music Week in England and assorted other events. The summer was “the most fantastic ever — the best time of our professional lives,” said Coffey. . And on Free Trade itself? “Oh, t think we're selling — giv- ing away — our sovereignty. We're selling our souls for a mess of potage. We don’t need to be any closer to the Americans than * we are now, which is pretty God damned close.’ The perceived impact of Free Trade on Canadian publishing? “| suspect that it may make it possible for them (the Americans) to come into this country and compete unfairly with Canadian books. This terrible ‘notwithstan- ding clause’ gives them the right to retaliate against any industry in Canada and not just the publishing industry — it holds up the cultural 140 Lonsdale, N. Van. area as hostage.” Some people have speculated that The Arctic Grail may be Ber- ton’s last chapter in a three- decade love-affair with Canadian history but nothing could be far- ther off the mark.
