IF YOU'RE a typical homeowner, selecting asphalt
shingles for re-roofing can be confusing.

However, taking the time to determine which
shingles are best suited to your needs will pay divi-
dends by providing the best value for your roofing
dollars.

Basically, there are two types of asphalt shingles
from which to choose — those with an organic base
and those with an inorganic base.

Both offer good looks, durability, economy, fire
protection and low maintenance. That’s what makes
asphalt shingles the most popular roofing material for
both new construction and re-roofing.

Here are some tips to help you select quality
shingles for your re-roofing needs:

Regardless of the base material, the manufac-
turer's limited warranty is the best indication of a
shingle’s useful life span.

2. Both organic and inorganic shingles have some
advantages worth considering. Inorganic fibreglass

shingles tend to be somewhat lighter and less bulky
than organic shingles — and will be easier to carry up
the roof if you are doing your own re-roofing.

Organic shingles, on the other hand, offer easier
application under extreme cold and warm weather
conditions. During midsummer or winter, this charac-
teristic can prove to be a very valuable criterion for
the D-I-Y roofer.

Regardless of the type of asphalt shingle selected,
be aware that homeowners teday are showing a
distinct preference toward architectural shingles for
re-roofing.

These shingles provide the look of wood — deeper
shadow line, thicker butts, earthy colors and staggered
patterns. Unlike wood shingles, architectural shingles
are more economical, durable and provide the security
of the UL label for fire safety.

Wood shingles require a costly chemical treatment
to qualify for a UL rating for fire resistance, and
generally do not last as long as asphalt shingles.
