Regardless of whether such a taxpayer himself _ ever sets foot inside a place of worship, the return he gets, in terms. of community services, from the local churches collectively far outstrips that figure. Those services extend far beyond the walis within _ which some 8,000 North Shore residents worship every week. They include such things as the regular visiting of. hospital patients, ongoing help for aged and handi- capped neighbors, the training of young people in counselling in bereavement and. other personal crises, and active support of many secular volunteer agencies (over town, the Food Bank centre at Christ Church Cathedral being a notable example). The social value for the entire community of these ‘outreach’? activities by church folk and their clergy -- themselves often financially hard pressed -- appears on no balance sheet. It’s high time it did.
