wm 58 - Friday, November 29, 1985 - North Shore News Safety's a big concern when travelling IF I HAD to analyze the travel questions I’ve been asked over the years, I’m sure that the largest percentage would probably be regarding safety. Most of us have fears that are emphasized when we're in unfamiliar places. We're afraid of heights and we have claustrophobia so we don’t like to be hauled up fd 35,000 feet strapped into 1 small seat and wedged in by a few hundred others. We have a hearty respect for water so we get edgy when we’re out on the ocean, no Jand in sight, and the ship starts to rock and roll. I’m willing to bet that the major cause of seasickness hasn’t. anything to do with our ears. It’s our fears that do it to us. We abhor violence so the thought of facing a gun ter- Tifies us. We don’t want to be hijacked, pirated, mugged or caught up in a war. This fetter really sums it up. DEAR MS. McCREADIE: Your columns are great and interesting. Keep up the good work. Now my problem. We have come into a bit of money and my husband is determined to take a trip in around January or Febru- ary. Let me say now, I am terrified of planes, especially PATI ET ei ‘And All A i i - SRS 0) ey re a ens s, TP M i, $@ | Reg. +3595 Now °2595 a 7 colours to choose from oak or pine finish oy Solid Pine suites only $499 includes dresser, hutch & hy boy fe Pt 4 lately when there have been sO many crashes. But $ will do it if I have to. Aside from mode of travel, are there any ‘‘safe’’ places one can go to now? I mean there is so much unrest in so many places and we don’t want to be in the midst and if there's a better way to get there [| haven't heard about it. Because of my fear of fly- ing 1 book my flights very carefully. | do my best to take flights that make the fewest stops. 1 choose routes that keep me out of bad weather (for example, if ! were heading for Florida mid-winter, I'd head im- mediately south instead of flying East). 1 refuse to fly travel-wise of some turmoil. One even wonders if a cruise is safe. My husband would be restless if there was no golf so this is a must. We are senior citizens so not looking for night life. 1 am wonder- ing about Maui (we have been once) or Palm Springs. My son suggested a place called Hurricane Cove in the Bahamas which apparently has casinos, golf and nice beaches. This is a vague letter but if you could write a column on places where it would be friendly and safe we would so much appreciate it. We don’t want to be in a place where they resent tourists. ANSWER: | understand how you feel about fiying. I doubt if you’re one bit more frightened than I am but | do my share of it. Why? Enroute, 1 choose an aisle seat, read the safety booklet (although I’ve got them pretty well memorized by now), keep my scat belt fastened and count the rows to the emergency exits. And I pray a lot. Safety on the ground is another matter. Avoiding war zones is practical. Any country that has a majority living in poverty isn’t as safe as one that hasn't. Ghettos are well avoided anywhere. Any resort in any country is relatively safe because the management sees to it. Mind you, it’s a little unsettling to see coils of barbed wire strung around the perimeters of the private beach. I’ve been to most of the Caribbean Islands but un- fortunately not the Bahamas, If I were to choose the safest I’ve visited | 200Ibs it would be Aruba and Cu- racao as the Dutch have treated these colonies fairly. In fact, the last time 1 was there (just after the Falkland War) the people were so pro-British it was astoun- ding. They were so grateful that the Brits held off the Argentines because they felt that if Argentina had won, Venezuela would have mov- ed on the Dutch. Your idea of Maui is ex- cellent — there has been a litle trouble with the resi- dents but on the whole the island is safe — just keep away from secluded beaches at night. You can golf yourselves to death if you like and there are now non- stop flights to Maui from Vancouver. Palm Springs, too, is rela- tively safe — they don’t re- sent tourists for obvious reasons. If 1 were to choose the country in which I felt the _safest and most welcomed it must be Fiji. They fove tourists and the crime rate is very low. Don’t worry about a cruise — after that unfortu- nate incident in the Mediter- ranean you can be sure that security precautions have been beefed-up. Also, the sheer volume of passengers and crew aboard is a safety factor. There isn’t a whole lot of golf involved but there are some linés that provide driv- ing ranges with nets. | doubt flash the roll? Just think how left out youll feel when all your friends are chatting about their travels — and how brave you'll feel when you get home safely. if your husband would get restless — there’s just so much going on that the main § problem is finding enough § time to sleep. Safety is such a relative J thing — you're more apt to 4% be injured in your own 9 house than at a resort and | more likely to be killed driv- ing to the airport than on a plane.
