10 - Wednesday, August 21, 1985 - Nurth Shore News inquiring reporter by Barrett SAVE-ON FOODS ir North Vancouver is setting an example for other grocery stores io open their doors until midnight. Recently Safeway on Lonsdale is open seven days a week, 8 a.m. to midnight. Inquiring reporter asks people on the street if this is a healthy or unhealthy direction. Today’s question is: Should stores open for longer hours? Caro! McKinnon North Vancouver I think it’s good. It’s very handy, especially for someone who works late. Tim Thompson North Vancouver It think it’s kind of good for people who have to shop after work. If they get off work and don’t s ‘have anything at home to eat, they'll need to go out vand shop. . Gail Scoular North Vancouver I think it’s good that they’re open late, but I don’t think it’s good that they’re competing, “because they get into : fights, go on strike and it’s awful for the public. Martin Quesnel North Vancouver 1 don’t think it’s a good idea, because there’s enough business for everybody. But by stret- ching the store hours out, it makes it harder for store owners to compete. It’s more convenient for shoppers, but they have enough time to shop. Kevin Wilson North Vancouver It’s definitely more con- venient, but I don’t know that it’s a good thing. It’s more of a fight against stores than trying to be convenient. I don’t think as many people use it at night. The stores are just cutting throats. Animal studies show prejudice to females NON-HUMAN females are victims of the same type of sexual stereo-typing as their human counter-parts, ac- cording to a recent analysis of the animal behaviour lit- erature. Dr. Anne Innis Dagg, of the University of Waterloo’s department of Integrated Studies, feels that sexual bias in descriptions of the social behaviour of animals is still Winner EILEEN Frost of North Vancouver is our latest win- ner in the Find Your Name contest. She says this bias is due partly to ignorance on the part of the authors, partly to a back-lash against feminism, and partly to the growing tendency to apply: sociobiology (the study ‘of the biological bases of social behaviour) to humans. But most of the scientists were men: Dr. Dagg feels that they took to the field a bias against women which they extended unconsciously to their non-human subjects. This bias against women has entered the scientific lit- erature on animal studies in a variety of ways, she says. For example, many reports have internal contradictions. One scientist described baboons’ behaviour in human-like (anthropomor- phic) terms, using words like *‘*bachelor’’ and ‘*bigamous’’, even though the animals’ behaviour did not show any kind of mar- riage relationship between the dominant male and a specific female and the “bachelors”? were essentially celibate males. INITIATE MATING Likewise many reports “describe female baboons as subservient to males, yet go on to point out that the fe- males initiate mating when and with whom they choose, she says. Many animal studies have been sex-biased because of their design, Dr. Dagg says. For example, males in a given monkey population are identified individually, but females are not. The latter are only mentioned in terms of their association with par- ticular males; consequently the’ behaviour of adult fe- maiss and juveniles is largely ignored, Dr. Dagg says scientists sometimes use inaccurate terminology to describe what they see.
