The Ed- monton born and raised singer-songwriter was learn- ing the music trade at age nine, but says he only began taking it seriously six years ago, ‘‘and I'm not even sure I take it seriously now.” The music industry, however, has taken Feehan seriously since he first burst into musical prominence in {978 with ‘‘Leaving For Maui’. The song, written and co-produced by Feehan for Footloose, his first pop ensemble, cracked interna- tional playlists, while the subsequent follow-up album, “Time Is Right", launched Footloose to number one on tadio airplay lists Canada. But, inevitably, the ballad- heavy Footloose sound soon ran its mellow course, and Feehan, consistent with the band's name, decided to across EX- F OOTLOOSE MASTERMIND, Tim Feehan, fronts the Euro-bop of the Tim Feehan Band to Saturday at Holidays. move on: “We saturated the market with Footloose, and f felt like I wanted to write on my own,” Feehan released his first solo album,‘'tSneak Preview’, in 1982 on the in- dependent Mustard record label. The following year, “Never Say Die", a single from his second solo album, again broke into the Cana- dian top ten airplay list. Feehan had survived the one- hit-wonder stage. Though he aspires to the craft of songwriting, Feehan says he feels equally at hame in the studio. “Writing, recording, and production---each area of making a record interests me with the same level of intensi- ty when I'm doing each par- ticular phase. It’s the total product, the total sound and how it all comes together that is important to me."* Feehan's versatile talents have recently led him to the HREacee - NEWS photos Mike Wakelleld COLOR THEM gold. Feehan has now marshali- ed “the cream of Alberta musicians’ and come up with the Tim Feehan Band. “We are heavily influenced by the technological sounds coming out of Europe,” says Feehan, ‘‘but we're not let- ting the technology over- whelm our sound. We use it, it doesn’t use us; we're com- panions in technology. The band’s sound is slick, but with a definite prairie rock edge.”’ Feehan says seven major record labels have shown an interest in the band and the tracks for an upcoming Feehan Band album, ten- tatively titled, ‘‘Read Bet- ween the Lines'’.
