The reason city council denied a permit was lack of parking spaces. [ have never heard of anything so ridicu- lous. Neighborhood pubs are so called, for locals of an area to gather and have a quiet pint with family or fellow neighbors, so why have any parking at all, are we not trying to encourage drinkers not to drive anyway. If we had a truly neighborhood pub in every community people would be able to go out for a quiet drink and walk home, or have a short taxi or bus ride home. Pedestrians threatened Dear Editor: Once again, ‘‘Child’s death mourned”’ documents another incident where pe- destrians are being struck down by motorists. 1 am fed up with the irresponsibility of motorists and feel that while Mr. Bright’s intentions may be in the right place, his conclusions are wrong. The Districts and Cities of North and West Vancouver mark clearly on the roads and crosswalks adjacent to schools, major intersections and high-pedestrian traffic areas. Signs, lights and speed restrictions stili do not en- courage motorists to obcy the law When Tanya McNulty stepped into the crosswalk (while a stopped motorist allowed her to cross), why was the woman who struck the child proceeding without caution in an area where children are expected to be crossing? { am so. annoyed about this incident and the daily reminder of others like it. Each morning I wait at a clearly marked crosswalk (signs, markings on the street, and red illuminous centre poles all designate the crossing) and still, with one foot on the curb, the other in the crosswalk, eye contact with approaching drivers, I watch as drivers continue to speed through. I know there are pedestri- ans who annoy motorists and avuse the crosswalk system we have, but, come on motorists! it can be a matter of life or death Brian C. Kerr West Vancouver The local pubs of Europe have existed like this for a long time and 1 am sure we would be the same. Cit council must come to grips with the 80s and not think we are stil} in the 50s when cars reigned supreme. It is probably the reason why our transportation is light) years behind public transport in other cities. I have never been to Picasso's restaurant and haven't a clue how Michael Fournogerakis would run a neighborhood pub but that is not the issue, city council must deal with that not whether he has enough park- ing space. So wake up city council, deal with the right issues, not make excuses. Edward Knight North Vancouver DR.
