50 - Friday, March 8, 1985 - North Shore News Carson jazz fest returns THIS WEEK'S appearance of Wynton Marsalis at Car- son Graham Secondary was an apt preview for next weekend’s ninth annual B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival at the school, Organizer Rob Karr says since the festival’s inception, it has grown into ‘‘undoubt- edly the largest vocal jazz festival in Canada, and is also in the top seven or eight on the continent.’’ Competitors will number more than 1200 and are ex- pected to come fram throughout the Pacific Nor- thwest and parts of Canada. Weil-known members of the jazz community making up the adjudicators’ list in- clude Larry Lapin, Universi- ty of Miami, Loren Wenz, Salem, Oregon, Doug Andersson, McMinnville, Oregon, and Ken Kraintz, Everett, Washington. This year, the Canadian senior category has been eliminated. The reason? ‘‘As the fes- tival has gotten older, the Canadians have gotten better so they compete against the Americans,”’ says Karr. Professional singing group the Melloyds are also scheduled to appear at the festival which runs March 15 and 16. -———— WYNTON MARSALIS fields questions frum the crowd at- tending his music workshop session at Carson Graham Sec- ondary Tuesday.
