The Woolgatherer -very punny play

THE WOOLGATHER., now
on stage at Presentation
House Theatre, is a difficult
play to review.

There are lots of good
things to be said for the
production and as many bad.

The play itself has some
major flaws. It starts out
well with some very funny
lines given to Chiff (Terry
David Mulhgan), a punster
who is consistently set up by

stratght-man Rose tit
Daum).
The two actors handle

thetr parts mecety and after
some Initial flatness. the play
takes shape along with the
characters who begin to
reveal their respective fears.

Chiffs problems revolve
around his job as a truck-
driver and he keeps them at
bay with his humor. Rose,
en the other hand, can't deal
with reality - her painkiller is
her dreamworld.

But the play, which builds
up carefully during the first
act comes to too abrupt, too
hysterical and too long a
climax during the majonty
of the second act.

The play's uneveness
seemed to affect the actors
who change toe quickly
from the carefully built up
characters of the first act.

The play depends on the

pun to save it. The title, The
Woolgather, is itself a pun.
Rose is not only a dreamer,
woolgathering (to evade
reality, she is also unable to
deal with love. collecting
wool sweaters from pick ups
as a Substitute for sex.

This method of
woolgathering 1s how. she
meets Cliff and by the end of
the play we are supposed to
believe that the two people
have broken through each
other’s defenses and found a
common dream.
