SANTA came early to the
Verhiel home in North
Vancouver this year - in time
to make sure they have a
Christmas after all.

Up until Monday, things
had looked pretty bleak for
Lynn Verhiel and her three-
year-old daughter Miranda.

Being a single mother on
an income of unemployment
insurance since her
separation with her husband
some 18 months ago, it was

PATRONS of a North
Vancouver liquor store were
. held up Monday evening by
a man who fired a shot into
the ceiling.

RCMP say that when the
man, holding a handgun,
went into the liquor store at

“175 West Séc Street. at.
7:40 p.m. . the. only store
employee there went out to
the back of the building.

At that stage the man
robbed the four patrons in
the store at the time, netting
:@ few hundred dollars, firing

a shot into the ceiling.

WHEN 36 young “white
leghorn chickens got their
opportunity for freedom in

orseshoe Bay Monday
morning they didn’t hesitate
to grab it or spend any time
deciding where they wanted
to go.

They all made their way
straight to Gleneagles Golf
Course.

Prior to that, they had
been on a five-ton truck
heading into Horseshoe Bay,
when circumstances turned
in their favor.

The brakes on the In-
ternational truck failed-as it
was heading down towards
the ferry. terminal. The truck

smashed into’ a@ car, which

collided with another, which
in turn struck a third.

When the truck came to a
rest, the chickens didn’t
waste a minute deciding
what to do. Teed off with the
whole experience, the white
leghorns ‘all went to the golf
course, _

Meanwhile, the driver of
the truck, Abram Ginter, of
Langley, was Charged with
disobeying a traffic control
device - the sign at
Eagleridge instructing truck
drivers to stop and check

their brakes before starting
down the hill.

As for the chickens, their
liberty only lasted a day as
volunteers began rounding
them up on the golf course
Tuesday morning. By News
press time 15 of them were
already back in captivity.

obvious Christmas was going
to be a sparse affair.

Miranda’s grandparents
had granted her Christmas
wish of having “a Christmas
tree just like the one in Park
and Tilford Gardens” by.
giving her a 10ft. tree they
cut in the mountains.

Then a couple of days
before they plannéd bringing
it in to decorate it last
weekend, someone stole the
tree from outside the
Verhiel’s home at 1417 Jones
Avenue.

But thanks to a reader

learning of their bad luck
when he read about it in The
Sunday News, the Verhiels
are going to have their
Christmas after all.

“It’s not quite 10ft.,” he
said, “but it’s at least 9ft. and
hopefully it will do them for
Christmas.”

A man called the News to
say that he had brought in
three trees from Sechelt,
where he lives, while visiting
the North Shore, to say he .
had one tree spare and he'd
give it to the Verhiels.
