A& - Wednesday, January 20, 1982 - North Shore News | mailbox Concern about bridge, roads Dear Editor: OPEN LETTER TO HIGHWAYS MINISTER ALEX FRASER Iam moved towriteto you and your Ministry concerning three areas of concern to myself and, no doubt, countless others. 1. The Lions Gate Bridge. When are you going fo finish what you have started? Surely now that the preliminary work appears to have been done, and part already made wider, it is time to finish the job. The deck appears to be in‘a very worn state. 2. The Taylor Way/Upper Levels Intersection.. What a mess! It was better (for Taylor Way users) eight years ago before the “mess” was built. One wondered at the time what was going on ‘when one side of the bridge supports were taken down after they were put up. Who paid for that mistake? ¢ And now as I am told to stop by no less than nine.(9) red lights goimg north or south — why, I ask, wasn't aa ordinary cloverleaf (even with tight turns) installed? Often I am the only vehicle going north or south in the early morning, yet I am faced with nine red lights saying not to proceed, and I am the only car in sight. You may have very highly qualified and dedicated engineers in your department, but there is very little evidence they were used here. 3. The Squamish Highway. I suggest the most recent and tragic problems were caused by poor logging practices high up on the mountains. If the government had properly regulated this or, better sal, not allowed any logging on the west side of any mountains above’ the highway, you probably would not be faced with the situation which now exists. It is so elementary — remove the foliage and the dirt will move when it rains! Seldom has this ‘factor been discussed in the press. Your respons¢ to these expressed concerns is most eagerly awaited. Victor Warren West Vancouver Respect for property vital to civilization Dear Editor: OPEN LETTER TO WEST VANCOUVER COUNCIL Thank Lord we are already proud owners of the — best play , pleasure , and fun grounds on this earth. I — should know well because | circled our globe. However, now is the time to concentrate your valuable efforts as well as our ever more precious tax money on badly needed bread and butter issues, and not to use more public energy on felling new forests for ever- increasing paperwork. We all will be surprised what will happen this year and next; we better close ranks and stay together for survival. And let us have more respect for property, the fruit of individual achievement, which © still remains a basic human right of our society. Without that our western civilization will wither and cease to exist. All the best for all of us Alfred R. Rothe, Drjur. West Vancouver Dear Editor: Your front page of the Sunday issue, Jan. 3, 1982 was most impressive: “Demands Mount for New Squamish Route.” I am also sure that your statistics are correct re: “From January !, 1978 to October 31, 1981 there were 164 accidents in the Horseshoe Bay to Sunset Creek bridge section of the highway alone.” What you neglected to mention was the fact that most of these accidents occurred because Yamaha DK40 Organ WAS 3695.00 Saturday Only ‘2197> STOCK NO. 321 SAVE ON PIANOS!
