Buick to provide 500 cars By SUDY CELMER DETROIT (UPD - Buick is joining the 1984 summer Olympics as its official automobile in the Olym- piad’s first year of entirely private sponsorship. Peter Ueberroth, president of the Los Angeles Olympics Organizing Committee, announced recently General Motors’ Buick Division will be the sole automaker sponsor of the games. All previous Olympic games have been funded by the government and private donations. The Olympics have had an automakers sponsor since World War Ul, Ueberroth said, although the 1976 Montreal games marked the only other time an American Car was a sponsor. In an attempt to stay in the black, organizers of the 1984 Olympiad are tapping into big corporations for co sponsorship while refusing to accept a dime from private donors. “There will be no government funds or tax- payers’ funds’ used,” Ueberrot told a news conference.
