therapists say one couple out
of every 20 fail to con-
summate their marriage
because of religious hangups
or a neurotic sense of loyalty
to their families.

An article
Tuesday in Glamour
magazine said: “Some of
these couples react by
numbing all thoughts and
sensations associated with
sex: others feel intense
shame, depression, or rage.”

Irwin Hirsch, a New York
City psychoanalyst, said
probably the most common

neurotic, and often un-
conscious “loyalty” to
families. -

“One or both partners may
be immature and not really
‘married’ because they
already feel married to their
families,” he said. “By. failing
