Local firm unveils . new children’s wear line DESIGNED AND manufactured in Vancouver, Tadpole's children’s wear is coming out with its spring and summer line for 1991, Carole Herder’s whimsical designs have helped develop her venture from a small word-of- mouth business to a thriving wholesale business that distributes kids’ wear across Canada and in the U.S. Herder said she created Tadpole after the birth of her son in 1987. “My aim was to fill the growing need for practical yet innovative children’s wear at prices that fit into a young family’s budget,”’ she said. Drawing on her fine arts background, she created a small line of infants’ wear and called it Tadpole after her son’s nickname. Since then Tadpole has expand- ed to a point where Herder pro- duces three complete collections of playwear — spring/summer, fall and winter — for sizes six months to eight years. In August, Tadpole moved into new factory space on Commercial Drive. . The Tadpole designs are fun yet functional, appealing to kids and parents alike. Trademark design features of Tadpole include wide necklines, elastic waists and deep ribbed sleeve and ankle cuffs to add extra inches. Front opening snaps and velcro closures are hid- den under buttons and_ infant jumpsuits have leg zippers in place of snaps. Tadpole’s spring-summer collec- tion is soon to make its debut with its vibrant, tropical theme. Exclusive novelty prints in bright sea shades are the highlight of the season, according to Herder. Made in Italy, Tadpole’s polished cotton seahorse pattern paints a vivid underwater scene in two color combinations — in cool blue, purple and aqua or in a warm gold rust and purple. From Senegal, the second print features hand batik fish swimming up rippled waves. Both cotton prints have been thoroughly tested for color fastness and durability. “I've washed a sample with every load of laundry for the past few months and it improves with each wash,’’ says Herder. Ribbed T-shirts, cycling shorts and leggings are garment dyed to match in a bright color selection of solid fuchsia, jade, purple and gold. The spring putlover motif features a playful scahorse frolick- ing in the waves. Cycling bags, sun hats and headbands complete the season’s sunny look. In addition to Tadpole’s basics — baggy jumpsuits, sundresses and knit separates — Herder has introduced some new clothes for older kids. Solid color blocking highlights the bright) printed pockets in a hooded kangaroo jacket. Tad- pole’s Lambada dress shows off a scooped back and contrasting full sleeves and skirt in’ a) brilliant shell-patterned knit. Tadpole designs are made from 100 per cent polished cottons and woven sheeting knits like jersey, ribbing and fleece. Tadpole’s retail prices range from $14 for a garment dyed T- shirt to $60 for the Lambada dress. “CHECK E ue cE SEMINAR aie § SEWING! ntl ehh wt FASHION: | om * Fashion styles to sew daytime co arginates Dusiness ang casual Pattern selection Layout tips for economy The inside story on interfacings Smoctn seaming Wastung ang care made easy innesatine accessories: Designer looks on 4 budget Also: Tadpole garments are available at several Lower Mainland stores as well as at North Shore loca- tions including Lucy’s Place and Kids Quay Fashions.
