number. The company is
again sending out a recall
on Model A474AL, Type
A3 with series numbers end-
ing in 58 or 68. These were
made in 1985 and 1986.

BUDGET BEATERS

If you have a machine purchas-
ed in the U.S., several in-house
heand names were used for this
same defective model and they are
also being recalled. If you think
your machine might be one of
these, the toll-free nurnber to call
is 1-860-465-3483.

The problem with the coffee
makers is that they can catch fire
— on the last recall, I had a
phone call from a News reader
who plugged in her machine to
brew while the family went for a
walk. They returned to find their
home full of smoke, but fortu-
nately the fire hadn’t spread.

Another reader called to tell me
that she’d packaged up her coffee
maker and mailed it back to the
company. They returned a brand
new appliance and a couple of
gifts — I think she said a pair of
oven mitts and an apron.

Now, for my confession. I've
got one of the previously cited
dangerous models and have
known for several years that 1
ought to return it, but it’s still
brewing our morning coffee. The
reason I haven't sent it back is a
four-letter word — lazy.

It's going this week.

Besides, it’s practically worn
out anyway and | was about to
buy a new one. Nice of Proctor-
Silex to renew the offer.

But please heed this warning. I
just returned from a trip to the
U.S.A. and in the Portland
Oregonian read about the U.S.
recall. Unfortunately, 1 didn’t clip
the article but if my memory is
correct, 124 house fires were trac-
ed to this same coffee maker.
