As with the story of the half- full versus the half-empty glass, there are two ways we can view this information. Pessimistic gardeners will be convinced that everyone else is wiser than they are and therefore should follow their example and not enter. This is the same person who bought his/her fast house during the rush towards the cliff in the early ’80s only to sell it after smashing on the rocks below later in the decade. The optimistic gardener likely sold to the free-faller and was there waiting at the crash site. To these opportunists, a low number of entries equals a better chance of winning; not that posi- tive-minded pzople such as these need'to rely on luck. Jam not suggesting that enter- ing your garden or nominating your favorite block will turn you into a real estate tycoon, but it may just brighten up your days a litthe. ' In general, I would say that the vast majority of plantsin our =~ gardens seem to be soaking it up :. — pun intended. Therefore things really aren’t as bad as they seem and you really should enter the contest — or nominate a beautiful block.
