rec cenire competition is subsidized

ROY Baumgartner has a folder four inches thick,

filled with clippings, notes, reports and brochures.

The co-owner of Gold's Health and Fitness, Baumgartner is a savvy busi-
nessman, so he’s tracking what the competition is doing. And they're doing, a
lots in North Vancouver they’ve spent almost $900,000 on fitness equipment
since 1998, and his competitors in West Vancouver are planning, to add a
S$1L.8-million fitness centre to an existing aquatic centre which Is seon to
undergo a major renovation,

Baumgartner — who owns Gold’s with his brother Wade — is competing
with the local municipalities. And those fitness centres are partly paid for by
you.
“know what [have to do to compete with a private club — we're on the
same playing field. But there’s no way on God's earth [can compete with
public money.” .

That’s why he recently had bis lawyer send a letter to the North Vancouver
Recreation Commission (NVRC), the District of North Vancouver and North
Vancouver City, regarding concerns that the recreation commission is in direct
competition with Gold’s.

Terminal plans anger parents

A Horseshoe Bay parent group sent a warning
shot across BC Ferries’ bow last week.

The recently formed Gleneagles Concerned Parents Conmittee (GCPC)

is worried about tie environmental and safety impact of BC Ferries’ plans to

spand its parking capacity, maintenance facilities, ticket booths and admin-
istrative space at the Horseshoe Bay terminal.

GCPC sent a fetter to BC Ferries CEO Bob Lingwood last week stating
their intention to file an injunction against the Crown corporation by the
end of October. The fetter cites the “irreparable, harm” that construction
and expansion would cause to neighbourhood children: It also suggests that
RC Ferries refrain from signing any construction contracts.
