A story about the missing deer was published the June 11 News. The concrete animal was a memento to her late husband, who loved animals. ft was chosen by Gardner's children and had been on her front lawn for more than 30 years. A note placed around the dilapidated animal's neck read: “Saw vour ad in the paper. [found it in the forest on 3rd. Looks beaten bur at least it’s back.” While reading the letter, Gardner said, * ‘Looks beaten?” It's destroyed.” Gardner said she believed the culprits returned the deer. “I think they got a guilty conscience about it and brought it back, If it were you or me who found it, would you not have _ dejivered it in broad daylight? This was delivered in the middle of the night,” she said. Gardner added that only her street name, not her address, appeared in the paper: “They must have known exactly where to deliver it.” But it’s not all bad news for Gardner. After reading the story - in the News, North Vancouver resident Trevor Warrington contacted Gardner and offered to replace the deer. Of Warrington’s kind gesture, Gardner said, “He sounded very sincere. Him and his mother had been talking about it. She felt the same way he did: that this kind of vandalism shouldn’t be done and that North Vancouverites should stick together.” Warrington’s mother and Gardner are both 81 years old. He's currently making arrangements to deliver the deer to Gardner’s home.
