Stereopie Friday. February 11, 2000 - North Snore News - 29 ith Jones @ Our Lady Peace with t Stereophenics at GSI Place, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. Bob Mackin News Reporter bnackin@nsnews.com STEREOPHONICS aren’t yet dodging the quantity of panties and bras that fellow Welshman Tom Jones does. “We've had one or two bras thrown at us, we usually throw them back,” said the band’s bassist Richard Jones (no rela- tion) on the phone from Edmonton. “They’re a litle bit too big for our liking.” Through the first week of their tour opening for Our Lady Peace, the band’s female fans haven't tossed any under- garments on stage. But there is suil time before the tour ends Tuesday at GM Place in Vancouver. “I think they’d be a little bit too cold if they started to do thar,” Jones said. Jones, singer/guitarist Kelly Jones (no relation) and drummer Stuart Cable are on their first cross-Canada tour. The residents of Cwmaman, Wales are promoting their sophomore album Performance and Cocktails, last year’s followup to 1997's Word Gets Around. They were the first band signed by V2, Virgin Records’ founder Richard Branson’s fledgling record label. They made Wales proud by recording a cover of Three Dog Night’s “Mama Told Me Not To Come” last year with Tom Jones. The song appears on Jones’ Reload album on the inde- pendent Gut label and released through V2. Other duets are with the Barenaked Ladies (*Litle Green Bag"), Van Morrison (“Sometimes We Cry”) and Robbie Williams (“Are You Gonna Go My Way”). They completed the video with Jones in Beverly Hills, Calif. before starting the Our Lady Peace arena tour in Toronto Feb. 1. “All our parents and auniies love Tom Jones, he used to play all the pubs and clubs around Wales,” Jones said. The band met him backstage after a concert in the Welsh cap- ital Cardiff and spent dime listening to him tell stories of Elvis Presley and Muhammad Ali over beer at a pub..He liked their company so much, he invited them to join him on a track for Reload. Despite Jones’ success since the 60s, Stereophonics claim more of a musical kinship to the Tragically Hip. “One of our mates was roadying for a band called Junkyard in L.A., he brought back a tape that just said Tragically Hip on it, it didn’t list any song titles or albums the songs were off. We just got into the music straight away.” The band covered Tragically Hip songs in concert and got to see their Canadian idols play in a packed London club. “The way Gordon Downie tells stories with the lyrics and per- forms, he’s mesmerizing. The band is just solid, a really good background behind them with bass and drums. The guitars are good, and the melodies.” Stereophonics would love to tour with the Hip, bur it doesn’r appear likely in the near future. The Hip is in the studio working on its next album which is due this summer. Stereophonics are planning to rerurn to the confines of the studio to make their third album in late July.
