set to perform

OVER 70 groups in more
than 220 performances are
now scheduled as
TheatreSpace hosts Van-
couver's first Fringe Festi-
val.

Running from September
13-22, .the varied line-up
ranges from works by
Leonard Angel, Jessie

Award winner Peter Eliot
Weiss and nearly 40 other
first time performances of
new plays. Performances for
young audiences include
works by Dolly Hopkins,
and the Vancouver
Shakespeare Festival.

Also included are new
music, several one person
shows and new dance works

including works by noted
choreographer Gisa Cole.
Modelled after Edin-
burgh’s famed Festival Fr-
inge and Edmonton’s Home
on the Fringe, Vancouver's
Fringe wili take place in sev-
eral alternate performance
venues along Main Street.

clude: Grunt Gallery, Main

Dance Place, Goh Ballet,
Western Front, Mount
Pleasant Neighbourhood
House, Bruhanski Theatre
Studio, Heritage Hall and
Vancouver Little Theatre.

Vancouver Opera gets
new technical director

NEIL McLEOD, one of
Canada's best technical
directors for the performing
arts, has been appointed
Director cf Production for
the Vancoouver Optia, ef-
fective September 1, 1985.
M.Leod fills the position
vacated by John Woods,
who has gone on to assume

the role of Production Man-
ager for the Walnut Strect
Theatre in Philadelphia.
McLeod comes to the
Vancouver Opera from the
Stratford Shakespearean
Festival where he held the
position of Expansion and
Technical Director. He has
had 15 years of professional

involvement in theatre and
film production in Canada
and the United States in-
cluding working as the
technical . director for the
Manitoba Theatre Centre in
Winnipeg, Festival Lennox-
ville in Quebec, the Neptune
Theatre in Halifax and the
Guthrie Theatre in Min-
