That expression may be
popular, but it isn’t always true.
Some things should be fixed
before they break. Take your
vehicle’s fan belt. Please!

It’s a simple thing, just a
piece of rubber. But the fan
bel: runs the alternator, which
provides clectrical power anc
keeps the battery charged.
With warmer temperatures
coming on the risk of getting
stuck without that electrical
power increases. If that hap-
pens your car will run for only
as long as the battery lasts —
maybe halfan hour, then again,
maybe just minutcs,

For many cars, other things
run off belts, too. Power steer-
ing, water pump, air coadition-
ing — with the exception of
the water pump, these are
things you can live without
while you limp to a repair cen-

tre. Some cars have several
delts. Others have a single,
long, belt that does everything.
Most belts today are V-shaped.
They have cogs on the under-
side to allow a better fit around
the pulley and increased air cir-
culation. The air circulation
keeps them cooler, so they will
