High School Boys’ Cross- Country Championships last week in Victoria. David Milne finished third, Eric Kiauka fourth, Clayton Whitman 52nd, Cameron Mackenzie 79th and Gus Allander 89th for the Highlanders in a field of 300 competitors representing 33 teams. The cross-country course for boys covered six kilometres (3.7 miles). The Highlanders’ second-place result is the best for a North Shore school in either the boys’ or girls’ team competition since Hillside’s girls won in 1983. The Royals were led by Jan Collings in ninth and Brent McMahon in 13th, followed by Wyatt Hartley (46th), Brian Higgins (107th), Peter Keitel (132nd), Chad Clark (173rd) and Rudy Sediak (200th). In the girls’ race over four kilometres 0. (2.49 miles), Handsworth placed 18th of 27 teams with Liza Walker the Royals’ fastest in 48th place out of 242 finishers. Marie O’Connor of Collingwood was the North Shore’s top girl runner, as she placed in 31st spot. Others in the top 100 included Rockridge’s Anne-Marie Allander (59th) and Howe Sound's Julie Enkel (64th).
