The withdrawal is part of the government's policy to give the part-time Ulter Defense Regiment a greater role in support of the police, a ministry spokesman said. The army does not release precise manpower figures, but a spokesman said the withdrawal of a major unit would involve approximately 600 men. Nearly 1,000 troops were withdrawn earlier this year, reducing the number of soldiers in the strife-torn province to just over 12,000 - the lowest number since 1971. “It has always been the government's intention that no more troops were diverted from the NATO role than was necessary,” the spokesman said, but he added, “The fight against terrorism will continue unabated.” Soviets warn Canada of security MOSCOW (UPI) - The Soviet press warned Canada Thursday it faces a senous threat to its secumty by its continued military coupera- tion with the United States, particularly in the defense warning system NORAD The recent) computer problems that bnefly put US) defenses on alert: also put Canada “on the brink of a nucler war.” the Soviet accounts said “The present militaristic turn oon the course of Canadas ruling Liberal Party which won the general clections in January obviously runs counter to the clechon pledges of its leadership.” said Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star), the news paper of the Soviet military Krasnaya /vezda and the Tass agency. which the comments Canada ticked off a the that “record sums of news also camned about series of decisions by Ottawa yovernment resulted ain moncy allocated for mih threat laristic purposes this year.” The newspaper singled out Canada’s decision to extend for another year its NORAD agreement with the United States “Like Canadian American cooperation as a whole in the muiltary sphere. this decision, which makes for deployment of nuclear weapons on the termtory of the contrary (0 the interests of the Canadian / veda country as people © Krasnaya said Moreover Canada s membership ino NORAD. where American geacrals often play owith fire Is fraught with a serious threat to tts secumty Suffice it to recall the incidents with pro vocative crrors of NORAD) which ts) 80 often Calking about oa Soviet nuclear missile attack “Such crrom might put Canadas too on the brink of u nuclear wat the newspaper said Like Vin ytery no Saree brogeam graduate profeoannial mnt! are sere wirierent i New ov rb cre edeniling oC criprertiticria Ma yaa ne bre 6 mae mm don Dore 8 Meapwar te bee rte re Beet be tee rh ye reas Teena! parce Tapert tec re es go rtepared eet cre ftebemt Cae Verma ol pa fonanecaln a fem t yon eveything yore seal ot bewow abnonat nha. are vel rv ay seu nee prerestare carved reverent ymin tamtucr: mrad totm ce BuANcue Macponaip cone (MoDELUNG | 361 Water St Vancouver Le eamneMing -ewarding and fen thhe eservertvar' Plas to potr we 685-1244 OUR BUC CESS Beeows Hho V6B 4h wo ARE eee EE aE OPEN I PESTS EAE SORT TS eee ore PORTLAND, ORE: Using a high pressure hose, a sailor washes volcanic ash off the deck of the USS Halsey, Friday.
