ited Victoria each
March and was always

impressed by the show of

spring color, especialiy in the
rock gardens throughout the
city, With a lower rainfall
and numerous rocky out-
crops, Victoria and the
Capital Regional District are
suited to this style of garden.

The North Shore may not have
such ideal growing conditions for
rockery plants but they do flourish
and put on a great show each spring.

There is no standard definition
for rockery-type plants and anything
that will grow in a traditional rock
garden or wal] area can be included
in the group. Many grow less than
15 centimetres (6°) high but will
spread to several ft. in diameter.

The best conditions for rockery
plants are southern exposure. well
drained soil and large rocks. stone
wails or other hard surfaces to grow
over.

Concrete retaining walls are
often excellent sites for rockery
plants.

When using plants in this loca-
tion. try to Wain them to grow down
and cover between one-third and
two-thirds of the wail for the best
effect.

Also vary the length of the
plants that hang over the wall to
Create a more natural look, The
plants should be placed as close to
the front of the wall as possible.
Small hardy-type bulbs can be
planted to grow up between the
clumps of plants or come up
through them.

With lock block. rubble or dry
walls, the plants can be placed
between the stones at the time of
duilding or pushed in afterwards.
