F THE fact that more than

250,000 people were pre-

pared to go back to
Woodstock 25 years on and
wallow in mud and .
frogspawn for three days all
over again to profit cynical
promoters and monolithic
media corporations isn’t
enough to convince you that .
rock ‘n’ roll is an incurable
form of delusional mental ill-
ness, this little book surely
will.

It’s just a sampler of the
hypocrisies, banalities and inani-
ties uttered on the subject of rock,
mostly by its own practitioners,
whose qualifications as culture
critics amount to a questionable
cornmand of half a dozen guitar
chords at best.

“twas basically on about a
triple acid trip right when they
asked me to play at Woodstock, ”
confesses the Lovin’ Spoonful's
John Sebastian about his appear-
ance at Woodstock |. “Which
answers the question: Can a man
play his own songs when he
couldn’t find his car?”

Apparenily, Sebastian never
found his car, since he appeared
at Woodstock It. This answers the
burning question about what he’s

been doing for the last two and a
half decades and finally sheds
some light on those questions
about the long-term effects of LSD.

As you might expect, having
endured 25 years of ‘rock journal-
ism’, there’s an abundance of self-
important verbal flatulence from
all concerned: from panflashes
like Gary Glitter te true nobodys
like fatuous leftist folkie Billy
Bragg, who moans: “Being
spokesman for a generation is the
worst job [ ever had.” (So shut up
and go back to cleaning drains,
Bill.)

The late Kurt Cobain al least
had a post-modern sense of his
own redundancy: “Nobody
deserves to have their personal life
pried into like | did and no one
deserves to hear me whine about
itso much.” Give that man the
Ernest Hemingway Marksmanship
Award.

Still, the juiciest quotes come
from the mega-stars of the Sixties.
My personal favorite: Mick

Jagger’s youthful assertion,” i'd
rather be dead than singing
Satisfaction when I’m 45.” As the
decomposing remains of the
“world’s greatest rock band” take
the stage for yet another world
tour, (to support their appropriate-
ly named Voodoo Lounge album),
one can’t help observing that there
must be a backlog in the accounts
receivable department of Hell
because this debt is at least five
years overdue.

The biggest irony, of course,
isn’t the sight of Keith Richards
looking like a stand-in for the pic-
ture af Dorian Gray, or Jagger
prancing about in a Geritol frenzy
— it’s the eerie fact that you're
likely to hear Satisfaction on the
radio as many times or more on
any weekend now than you did
then.

if you happen to be a ‘demo-
graphically disadvantaped’ young
person today you're s.o.l. as far as

your music is concerned; margin-
alized to the ethereal netherworld
of low-power campus and co-op
stations.

As Jim Morrison said, to those
many years ago: “They got the
guns. We got the numbers.” (A
quote missing from this book.) He
didn’t know how right he was,
Rock ‘n’ Roll was, and is, tie
music of the baby-boomers, the
