8 - Sunday, July 31, 1994 - North Shore News MAILBOX Wet water comments Dear Editor: 1am appalled at the lack of pre- fessionalism by Greater Vancouver Water District manager John Morse for his comments recently to me at a public meeting on water disinfec- tion and conservation, When I asked Mr. Morse about the relation- ship between snowpick levels and the cutting of old-growth, which shades snowpack in forested areas, he said that “we have to consider how much water those big old trees drink up.” Supposedly Mr. Morse thinks that we should be removing all the trees in the watersheds so that more water and mud runs directly into the reservoirs. He also claims that silt and gravel transport- ed down from natural erosion and from clearcuts do not displace the capacity of the water storage areas, We need to implement a pro- gram (o stop the filling up of our reservoirs by placing settling ponds at the top ends of the rivers so that sediment does not reduce the water capacity of our three reservoirs, Settling ponds were used in the Capilano by common-sense engi- neers in the 1920s, yet Mr. Morse dismisses them.as unrealistic. He would rather spend millions of dol- lars on a filtration system to clean up the sediment problem and aliow logging to continue. Mr. Morse should resign from his position and let someone with vision manage the watersheds before he helps to ruin this important resource, Ross Muirhead North Vancouver User-pay the right water way Dear Editor: The need to conserve and not waste our excellent supply of water must be apparent to all. In West Vancouver the sewer collection mains were installed and it became compulsory to connect homes and businesses. This was a great step forward. THE FORECAST? It now needs a bylaw to require all water users to install a meter with a charge for water used over a base amount. The water supply system would then be economically self-support- ing on a user-pay basis. Derrick Humphreys West Vancouver A GREAT CRUISE HOILDAY!
