By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter — The decision quashes plans to turn the clubhouse into a liquor- serving establishment. “We are very disappointed,” said CRC director Noel Larkin. “We represent over 60 years of rugby on the North Shore and we are not a neighborhood pub as we were unfairly likened to by a few people opposing our application.” Larkin was referring to the Lower Capilano Steering Committee (LCSC), a residential ; ‘CINEMA 1 SEPARATE ADMISSION FEATURES RENAISSANCE MAN 6:50 pm THE HAWK 9:05 lobby group, opposed to having the Klahanie Park clubhouse selling aicohol drinks every day. “There was an overwhelming response by residents (against the liquor licence),”: said LCSC spokesman Linda Stonehouse. Larkin said the 166-member rugby club had West Vancouver municipal support. He said North Vancouver District (NVD) with- drew its support for the proposal, but didn’t oppose the pian. Stonehouse said NVD, and not West Vancouver, would be affected by liquor consumption at the club. Rugby players must use NVD streets lo leave the clubhouse, east of the Capilano River. The college has been given approval to proceed to tender its $1.48-million centre, said Miller, Construction on the 750- square-metre facility, which will serve the growing popula- tion of the Howe Sound corri- dor, is expected to begin in early summer and conclude in early 1995, he added. The new centre replaces Capilano College's existing lease facility in Squamish. The existing lease space pro- vides instruction for about 60 full-time students and has no access for students with disabil- ities, Miller noted. The permanent facility will | provide instructional space for 100 full-time students and will be completely accessible to stu- dents with disabilities. “The Squamish campus cen- tre is part of the government's Skills Now strategy to provide 8,100 new, full-time student spaces in B.C. and better access and support services for stu- dents with disabilities,” said Miller, The single storey, steel- frame building will house five lab-classrooms, a library and resource centre and faculty and support services offices.
