FIFTEEN YEARS ago tonight, Sid
Vicious, bass player of the Sex
Pistols, died of a heroin overdose at
a party in New York City, He was
21. The musician was arrested in
October of 1978 for the murder of
his American girlfriend, Nancy
Spungen, in their New York hotel
room. He was charged and sent to a
prison drug detoxification unit,
where he tried to kill himself.
Another member of the defunct
punk quartet eventually stood bail
for Vicious (born John Ritchie).
Since his release from prison he had
been staying clean, The shock of
the dose 15 years ago today. was too
much for Vicious, who collapsed
and died in the flat of his girlfriend,
Michelle Robinson.

injury-related death among young
American adults, according to the
U.S. Centres for Disease Contral.
