NEW CAULFEILD MIDDLE SCHOOL Residents raise parking, access concerns A REQUEST for a building height variance for Cauifeild middle school was delayed another week at the Nov. 1 - meeting of West. Vancouver District Council. The delay will give council time to consider neighborhood concerns about the new facility. The decision, made after a lengthy evening of public submis- sions, infuriated resident Linda Mitchell, who has been involved in the school’s planning process for several years. Outstanding issues include: © a requested nine foot (2.8 m) addition to the allowable height of the building (and roofing material to be used); ’ @ the main access to the school; - ® the -location of the teachers’ parking lot.: “Mitchell said there has already .been ample opportunity for reso- lution of the issues. - “You would appear to be stall- ing,’’ said Mitchell. ‘She accused council of holding .up the building of the school : “because of a roof.’’ ; But Mayor Mark Sager said it was. customary. for council, when considering a variance, to look at- an entire building project, ‘‘and ensure that it is built as sensitively THE FOLLOWING is .a brief -: summary. of..agendas for North Shore municipalities’ and school districts and new business licences: \ MEETIN ’* AGENDAS - North -Vancouver ’ City .Council: ‘1 Monday,’ Nov.~ 8, °.7:30. p.m.: “. But placement of the staff parking lot and its proposed use as a student drop-off continues to be of concern to residents living opposite the school site. Resident Arthur Edgson said he fears that trees, currently pro- viding screening, will be removed for the parking lot. He and other neighbors sug- gested the lot be moved to another side of the school, but school district officials said the area was being set aside to accommodate the site of a possible future western recreation centre. The middle school will .accom- modate about 750 students. Hillside, which the school will replace, has a current enrolment of 830. . Space for more students might be added at Caulfeild later, mak- ing it a senior secondary facility. Mary Fawley, chairman’ of the Eagle Harbor Community Services - Society, expressed concerns that this was an indication that the much desired western recreation centre might not end up adjacent to the school, as expected. Council members agreed that there could be better solutions to the problem of locating the staff parking at Caulfeild middle school. Sager suggested a subgrade parking lot below the school’s playing fields. Residents alluded to the process of public participation and negotiation that preceded the building of the Someplace Special shopping centre next to the school Site several years ago. They want the opportunity to: have the same level of input into the Caulfeild middle school pro- ject.
