80 - Friday, July 3, 1992 - North Shore News REAL ESTATE Study compares renters and owners over 30-year period MOST LOWER Mainland residents who bought homes in the 30-year span from 1961 to 1991 obtained significant financial advan- (ages over renters. and this will continue to be the case, a national housing research firm says. The study by Clayton Research Associates Lid., was commissioned by the Canadian Home Build- ers’ Association (CHBA). The ‘study concentrated on Ii centres — St. John’s, St. John, Charlottetown, Halifax, Quebec City, Medallion Winner Master (5 Yrs.} ‘Toronto, London, Win- nipeg, Regina, Edmonton and Victoria — and shows clearly that owners who purchased 20 and 30 years ago had markedly greater net worth than renters for the same period. The centres chosen are considered to provide a goad cross-section of the range of experiences of housing markets across Canada. Under the assumptions used for the study, the average difference in net worth in favor of owners over renters after 30 years (1961-91) was about $200,000; fur those who had owned as opposed to renting for 20 years (1971-91), the difference was about $140,000. “The study clearly dem- onstrates that home owner- ship has been an excellent investment,” said Ken Far- rish, president of. the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association.
