MAILBOX Horseshoe Bay’s had enough Open letter to The Rt. Hon. Michael Harcourt: The absence of prior consuita- tion with municipalities and the Horseshoe Bay community on all-night sailings is, in my opi- nion contemptible and dishonest, a patent attempt to numb public protest by a ‘‘done’’ thing. In fact. Frank Rhodes, B.C. Ferry Corp. CEO, came to the He-sesnoe Bay Community Association meeting (which he calls *‘successful'’?) to tell us just that — it’s done and lump it. He Jeft_ an alienated, deeply-angered audience. | It’s quite clear to me that the Ferry Corporation and successive governments for many years have kept their head in the sand about the real effects of coastal demographics on future ferry traffic volumes. Expansion has clearly been inadequate; so, isn’t it more than time for a formal task force? In the light of current events this task force had better report to the public as well as its political masters. In the meantime, how dare your administration force the people of Horseshoe Bay and Gleneagles and all along the route to pay for the shortcoming of government every night, in their homes, and — just to make sure the suffering is complete — offer truckers a discount to come here? Horseshoe Bay itself, steadily improving its quality of civic life with the cooperation of the municipality and the unstinting effort of local volunteers, is now to be thrust back by this insen- sktive, political escape hatch not ont; for your government but possibly for responsible parties in the Ferry Corporation who value their jobs. Anyone with an ounce of com- mon sense has observed over re- cent years that this small cove, in topography and area, is unsuited for the burgeoning volumes of Nanaimo traffic at any time. There's limited dispersal possibilities for pollution and noise; we've already had fatalities. And on the highway. ap- proaches, young people in orange Both sides need Dear Editor: Catherine Atyco’s May 8 article on abortion is a good illustration of why the issue won't 20 away. It is typical of the type of arti- cle that comes from both sides of the issue. We will never begin to approach a national consensus on the issue till some of the following begin to happen. Both sides need to revisit the issue in its totality. This is a med- ical, moral, legal, sociological, philosophical, demographic, psychological and spiritual issue. Neither side appears willing to look at all of these areas and try and understand what they mean to the diverse elements of our Cana- dian culture. Both sides need to view the other in a new light. It's been a hollow joke for at least four years. Your government is solving the problem by sacrificing the rights of a residential community to at least sleep in peace. Horseshoe Bay has had enough. Why do we have to attack the basic integrity of people who see life differently? It’s time we stopped defining the issue by the extremes of both sides. There has to be a better way.
