Dear Editor: I refer to the recent News View- point editorial Costly Challenge upbraiding a group of West Van- couver residents for challenging the Collingwood Schoo! expansion bylaw in the Supreme Court. I favor neither side in this dispute, which has been brought upon us, and very expensively, by West Vancouver District Council. Let us be clear about the facts. The 1988 Cfficia! Community Plan covering zoning, density, etc. is in full operation in West Van- couver. However, the district council in its wisdom, has taken unto itself the right to breach these well set-out areas, and allow Coll- ingwood School to upgrade to a senior school on a lot limited by size, etc. to only an elementary school, these many aggrieved citizens, in- cluding those residents in Glen- more, There is no grievance against Collingwood School ancl its laud- able aims. There is a grievance against Collingwood School, aided by the district council, going ahead and abrogating the Official Com- munity Plan applicable to this school. Mayor Lanskail said that “council would not be backing down on that basis (repeated court challenges of council decisions).”’ Therefore we, as the citizens, wil! be faced with further horrendous Supreme Court legal expenses in- curred unnecessarily (e.g. the Thorcon expropriation instead of a Get off single mothers’ backs Dear Editor: I take exception io Noel Wrisht’s ‘Insights’ that single mothers who don’t ‘work’ are monkeys on the back of society. A single muther has a job, a big one, and that is raising her child. Very likely she is the best person qualified to do this. What does anyone benefit by demanding that she go outside the home to work while paying strangers to look after her youngster? She is already doing the work of two people (hers and the father’s). What better work could she be do- ing than giving her child care and love? Rather than begrudge her the Unemployment Insurance or welfare benefits, we should assist any single parent who chooses to stay home with her child. Guaranteed Annual Income would be fairer than the present schemes. Help single mothers cope while the child is young and assist them in finding other work when the child is older. Our gain? Hopefully the children will grow into mental- ly stable and responsible adults. Perhaps the Unemployment In- surance investigator’s time would be better spent searching out the many able persons who regularly work the minimum limit, then loaf the rest of the year. Let’s get off the backs of the single mothers. Their burden is heavy enough. S. Kealey North Vaaconver purchase), with ever-higher mill- Official Community Pian.
