Clay pots and plastic pots are
used more widely, but these re-
quire different frequency of water-
ing — with plants in clay pots
needing watering more often than
those growing in plastic pots.

Clay pots are more porous than
others, and allow the moisture in
the soil mixture to evaporate
through the sides of the pot as well
as from the surface. Plastic pots,
on the other hand, are not porous
and so moisture is not lost through
the sides.

Glazed ceramic pots have no
drainage holes, so watering must
be done carefully to avoid having
excess water collect at the base of
the pot where it can reduce aera-
tion of the growing medium and
cause damage to the plant. (As you

know, plants hate to have wet -#

feet.)

Plants in glazed ceramic pots
require less watering than others,
and a good way to avoid over-
watering is to put 2 one to two
inch layer of coarse sand or gravel
in the bottom of the container.

It just isn’t possible to publish
an exact shedule for watering all!

in room temperature, light, humid-
ity, and types of containers, along
with other factors. A good rule of
thumb, the professionals say, is
that the foliage should never be
allowed to wilt between applica-
tions of water. Or, even better,
water the plants when the surface
of the growing medium: begins to
feel dry.
