Summer carpet clean-up

THE SUMMER months can be a
tough time for carpets.

Welcome mats are often ignored
as kids, pets and even husbands
track dirt through doorways and
down halls into aimost every
toom. High traffic activity

Often a gardener will simply
shake his head, not because he
finds the idea of a pond unattrac-
tive, but because the unknowns
seem to loom up so large and in
such numbers.

blems — not exactly — they are
simply unanswered questions and
their attendant doubts.

This is the first in a series of ar-
ticles designed to answer a number

_of those questions and thereby
dispel any doubt about the value
of a pund in even the most modest
garden,

DESIGN FUNCTION

The question of whether or not
to include a pond 4a part of a
garden should be a design decision.

Use water as another material
for incorporation into the garden,
as native grass or paving stones or
that favorite azalea.

Water should be used in com-
bination with all the other myriad
pieces that go into making each
garden a special place.

Water garden or lily pool or fish
pond or whatever form the water
might take, it should fit into the
garden as neatly as the shrubs and
trees. This is a matter of design.

In theory and in practice the
water garden is simply another bed
in which special plants may be
grown. Not only can the unique
properties of aquatic plants add a
great deal to the garden as a
whole, but the mirrored surface of
a pond can be an important tool in
creating a variety of stunning ef-
fects. This too is a matter of
design.

A pool can often give the garden
a focus.

Design is not difficult, but it does
require forethought and common
sense.

cleaner, it is smart to determine
how much machine you need and
how you iniend to use your
machine.

Will your carpet cleaner be used
solely for spring and fall clean-
ups? Should your carpet cleaner be
able to remove spills and stains?

Do you need a machine that can
be brought from closet to carpet in
a matter of minutes to pick up ac-
cidental spills?

There are basically three types
of carpet cleaners: ‘Steam’? ex-
tractors, rotary cleaners and dry
cleaning machines.

“Steam” extractors spray a mix-
ture of hot water and cleaning
solution directly into carpet fibres
and use a powerful vacuum to lift
out dirt and stains.

Rotary cleaners use brushes that
rotate at high speeds to clean
carpeting. If you desire to remove
shampoo solution, an additional
wet/dry vac is required.
