Don’t bother marrying at sea

I'LL TAKE a break from Great Britain for today to catch
up with some of the letters and questions from readers. This
first one caught my imagination!

Dear Barbara: My fiance and |
want to get married in an unusual
place —- one we haven't decided
upon as yet.

We thought about a cruise ship,
but were told by friends that ship's
captains no longer perform wed-
dings. Is this true?

Would a marriage service per-
formed in a foreign country be
considered valid in Canada?

Are there any regulations that
you know of preventing foreigners
from marrying in any country?

Answer:You might find the odd
ship’s captain who is also an or-
dained minister or Justice of the
Peace who could legally marry
you. But, I wouldn’t count on
it, and it certainly isn’t part of any
cruise program I’ve ever en-
countered.

The logistics of the thing are
unworkable. For the marriage 10
be legal you first must. have a
licence. From where? Here? Your
port of departure? The country in
which the ship is registered?

In days gore by when ship’s
voyages might last better than nine
months it was reasonable that the
captain perform marriages. Il-
legitimate children weren't well

received and marriage licences
unknown.

| contacted Vital Statistics and
they said that as long as your mar-
riage is performed legally abroad it
is recognized here. Just be sure
that you get a government mar-
riage certificate, rather than simply
a church certificate,

Most foreign countries perform
marriage services for anyone at all
but you'd be wise to contact the
Canadian office of the country you
decide upon, just to double check
before you buy your plane tickets.

Dear Barbara: My children, 1]
and 12 years old, must fly to Ot-
tawa next month to spend a month
with my ex-husband. They are
quite apprehensive about the trip
as it is their first Might and they
haven't seen their father in several
years.

Is there anything | should warn
them about with regards to the
flight?

Answer: When you bvok the
children’s flight, advise the airline
that they will be travelling unac-
companied. The airline will make
sure that your kids get on and off
with no problems.

Arrive at the airport at least an
hour before flight time to be sure
