Why are prices in
the U.S.A. so low?

Dear Editor:

The news tells us that Alberta is
cutting back on oil production and
exploration, shutting down wells
and laying off employees. Could
this be because most oil companies
are subsidiaries or mostly owned
by American firms? Are they
afraid of Canada becoming self-
sufficient and. Stop - buying from
the U.S.A.7

commodities, such as beef, pork,
turkeys, chickens, potatoes, ap-
ples, etc. going back and forth

We have just come home after
spending a month in the Seartle
area and were floored when we
saw the difference in the prices.
Cigarettes, beer, wine, liquor, fruit
and vegetables. Also dairy pro-
ducts and paper goods, and of
course, gasoline. When you see
these prices it can mean’ many

things. Taxes on liquor and ciga--

rettes.. Marketing boards on pro-
duce and dairy products,
monopolies, lack of competition,
too high a mark-up or just a plain
old rip-off.

We spend $50 on gasoline (U.S.)
every time we cross the border. We
leave almost empty and fill up
when we get across. On the return
trips, .we fi i! up before we come
across.

from us. How come? With all their

problems down there, there are
still thousands of - Canadians
waiting for their visas to get into
the States.

I haven't got the answer, but:

someone better find it soon before
the balloon bursts.
