A long wait for Dune

SPICE is the life of the empire.

Understand? If not,

the film Dune.

Dune fans have been
waiting a long time for this
movie and judging by their
comments, most
put down the book and pick-
ed up on
young messiah Paul Atreides
(Kyle Maclachlan) set out on
his quest to unite the universe
in peace and harmony.

To be fair, the futuristic
Dune flick is based on the
book and follows Herbert's
storyline with accuracy and a
certain degree of flair. But
for those who didn’t read the
book, the film is like standing
under a hail of meteorites,
and not knowing which way
to look or run. A good film
should allow everyone who
sees it to pick up the plot and
follow ut through

Paul Atreides is the son of
the House of Atreides ruler
and a Bene Gesserit con-
cubine called Jessica
(Francesca Annis). The Bene
Gessent is a religious order of
women, who, through their
psychic powers, manipulate
the universe.

Paul and his mother are
left to die on the planet Ar-
takis but find themselves
adopted by the Fremen, a
desert tnbe. The Fremen take
Paul to be their messiah who
will lead them in a Jehad (ho
ly war) to unite the universe

The film moves along at an
often bewildering speed of
hight, pulling the viewer from
arid desert scene to the
pomp and splendor of palace
halls and deep into the heated
battle between the good guys
and bad guys Without
knowledge of the book, you
are left in a deep, black space
wondering what the last scene
was all about
